Unfortunately he lost his leg above the carpus (wrist) due to a bad fracture of his right front leg. Amputations in dogs are not that uncommon. The problem with losing a leg though, is the stress that it places on the rest of the body. Especially the spine and the other joints that have to compensate. Dogs that have lost an entire limb develop early cases of arthritis as they age. Prosthetics allow these dogs to walk normally and to avoid these all too uncomfortable complications. Not all cases of amputation are amenable to a prosthetic, there needs to be part of the leg to attach it to.
